Computer Apps required

To develop its full potential, the WISDAM initiative will require the following related App programs.

In order to encourage the uptake of the wisdam sets of standardised data, the first four processes need to be available for free in a single App.

Because the fifth program will save users from re-entering the same data into their local database, it is not unreasonable to think that, to save themselves the bother of writing their own App program, some users might be willing to contribute a small amount, for example the typical £0.69 asked for a the cheapest iPhone App, as a contribution to the further development of the wisdam program.

A. A free App with programs to allow the following

A1. Inputing each small group of related data items (sinbads)

See the section headed “Sinbad datasets” (Standard INter-program Bundles of Associated Data) to see the proposed content of each small group of questions

This program will allow a keyboard to be used to input each group of flow-patterned questions (and all the associated allowable answers) so that the wisdam standard data sets become available in digital format.

It will probably need to be in two versions, one for professionals e.g. “DoB?” and a clearer version for first time users e.g. “Please enter your date of birth using the format Day/Month/Year (DD/MM/YYYY)” Each version will need to have help or explanatory text as appropriate. Primary health centres and other organisations will be encouraged to print out any relevant data on their databases in the same order that the information will be required to be entered as wisdam sinbads


A2. Simple printouts of wisdam data

This program will use the electronic data collected by the above to print out the first 1-2 pages of the wisdam paper record


A3. Output of printed labels

An App which allows the selection of sub-sets of the data for printing on different sets of sticky labels.

It is essential that the NHS and the social services (and all other institutions and organisations) standardise on three main sizes: Standard size - e.g. 21 per A4 sheet, Large - e.g. 8 per A4 sheet and Small - e.g. 65 per A4 sheets, labels) both to reduce costs but also so that the right size of space (standard, large or small) is always made available at the top right of every relevant page.

At present there is a stupid encouragement for the NHS logo to be printed top-right - when will those in authority get their priorities right!

Until such standardisation occurs this program will need to allow printing on different sizes of labels on different printers


A4. Printing individualised QR code squares

Printing out separate QR codes for each individual’s different sinbads might seem excessive but it is important that such codes are printed separately

a) to allow each individual to decide what data they are willing to release for different purposes.

b) to update different sinbads at different times


B. A separate (low cost) App to read QR codes

and to translate the data into CSV or tab-delimited format for them to be transmitted into existing electronic patient databases.

Because this program is not of any immediate use for those creating wisdam folders but will save users from re-entering the same data into their local database, it is not unreasonable to think that, to save themselves the bother of writing their own App program, some users might be willing to contribute a small amount, for example the typical £0.69 asked for a the cheapest iPhone App, as a contribution to the further development of the wisdam program.
